DataRequirements

Modalities, consent gates, and transfer specs for joint research work.

01 // Modalities

Signals we
prefer to receive.

Coverage need not be complete — partial modality sets are welcome when staging context is available and consent is clear.

Modality 01

EEG

Scalp or EEG-like band summaries that capture rhythmic structure across sleep stages.

  • Preferred: multi-channel or band-power time series
  • Document montage / reference scheme when available
  • Partial coverage acceptable with staging context

Modality 02

HRV

Autonomic volatility and interval series that gate motion intensity in the field model.

  • RR / NN intervals or derived HRV features
  • Aligned timestamps with sleep epochs
  • Device / algorithm provenance in metadata

Modality 03

Respiration

Breath rate or respiratory effort streams that inform modality gates and transition context.

  • Continuous waveform or epoch-level rates
  • Note sensor type (belt, nasal, derived)
  • Optional if EEG + HRV + staging are strong

Modality 04

Hypnogram

Sleep-stage labels that anchor comparative sessions against motion-field reconstructions.

  • Standard stage codes (W / N1 / N2 / N3 / REM)
  • Epoch length and scoring method documented
  • Scorer / auto-score provenance preferred
03 // Data Format

Sampling, files,
and metadata.

Specs below are preferred targets, not hard exclusions. Document deviations; adapters can meet partial modality sets.

Sampling

  • EEG

≥ 128 Hz preferred · band powers at epoch rate acceptable

  • HRV / ECG

≥ 250 Hz for waveform · or RR series at native resolution

  • Respiration

    ≥ 25 Hz waveform · or epoch-mean rates

  • Staging

30 s epochs standard · document if nonstandard

File formats

  • Preferred

    EDF / EDF+ · CSV / TSV time series · HDF5

  • Staging

CSV / TSV with epoch index + stage code

  • Archives

ZIP or tar.gz · no proprietary lock-in required

  • Avoid

Encrypted vendor silos without documented export path

Metadata

  • Required

Sampling rates · units · epoch length · modality list

  • Provenance

Device / montage / scoring method when known

  • Consent flag

    Secondary-use attestation reference (no PHI)

  • Alignment

Shared time base or sync notes across streams

04 // Upload & Transfer

Secure channels,
zero PHI.

Transfers happen only after proposal and IRB alignment. Never send data unsolicited or through informal personal email.

Secure transfer

Use institution-approved secure channels (encrypted link, SFTP, or IRB-approved cloud share). Credentials rotate per engagement.

Encryption in transit

TLS for web transfers; encrypted archives at rest when partners require. Keys exchanged out-of-band under partner policy.

No PHI

Do not include names, MRNs, dates of birth, free-text clinical notes, or other identifiers. If unsure, withhold until redacted.

Manifest required

Every transfer includes a plain-text inventory: files, modalities, sampling rates, and consent attestation reference.
